If it seems like Bill Lockyer's been around forever -- well, he has, just about. The Hayward Democrat has done well at a number of jobs over several decades, from the Legislature to attorney general. But as state treasurer for the past four years, he has really shone, maturing to near-statesman stature. At a time of turmoil for California, the treasurer needs to be a good manager of the state's investments and a voice of reason on budget matters.

On Nov. 2, Lockyer is the right choice for voters, perhaps now more than ever.

His opponent, Orange County Republican Mimi Waters, has never voted in favor of a budget while in the Legislature and has taken an ironclad pledge to oppose any new taxes. Thoughtful political leaders know absolutist pledges are a bad idea, shutting out possibilities of compromise that could help the very interests they claim to represent. And the last thing California needs in the treasurer's office is someone rigid in ideology. It is a job for a pragmatist.

I've had the chance to speak with Bill Lockyer at length on two occasions. He is a skilled politician and if Jerry Brown hadn't run this time, he would have been a very good opponent to Meg Whitman. He understands the world of finance and he would make a great debater when talking about tax fairness

He understands the world of finance and he would make a great debater when talking about tax fairness and who CAN and SHOULD finance California's public services.

Bill is a picturesque character and that's important for this position :) you need to be able to stand in front of people and be ready for anything like when he asked for help to Geithner and had to come back and find a way to make things work.

California Attorney General, President Pro Tempore of the Senate, State Treasurer: Bill Lockyer contains one of the most diversified work experience in CA Government. The experience he brings to his position is unmatched by any of his opponents and therefore, should keep his seat.

Bill Lockyer has been a public servant in various aspects of California government for almost 4 decades now (Wiki). The leading opponent has pledged to help reign in runaway deficits, and pledged to be more responsive. But the CA Treasuerer does not have the authority to do this with the budget;

Bill Lockyer has been a public servant in various aspects of California government for almost 4 decades now (Wiki). The leading opponent has pledged to help reign in runaway deficits, and pledged to be more responsive. But the CA Treasuerer does not have the authority to do this with the budget; that falls under the purview of the Legislature. Its not a good idea to rapidly change gears whilst we remain in the middle of an economic rut. It is also worth pointing out that Mr Lockyer is a very outspoken person, and anyone who has heard him speak will tell you that he doesn't mince words about things like the budget.
