November 02, 2010 California Election
Proposition 19 — ✔ YES
There are several reasons why the state of California would benefit from the passing of prop 19. Strictly from an economic standpoint, this proposition could help California's troubled economy greatly. It has been estimated by state officials that legalizing marijuana would produce $1.4 billion in tax revenue yearly. Also, eliminating the estimated 60,000 arrests made each year in the state of California would free up much more concentration and funding for more violent crimes to be prosecuted. Additionally, violent drug trade would DECREASE after this proposition went into effect. Looking back at historical evidence of this, bootleggers during the prohibition of alcohol nearly disappeared after the prohibition was repealed. As Californians, we must press for this proposition to be passed. 5:36AM Sep 30, 2010
Proposition 20 — ✔ YES
If passed, Prop 20 would take the power away from legislators in the California State Legislature and put it in the hands of a committee. This committee is comprised of an even number of Republicans, Democrats, and Independents, so therefore, redistricting would be a much more balanced process. Also, prop 20 takes the game of playing favors out of redistricting for high profile politicians. This proposition will force legislators to be more responsible for who they are representing. 8:27AM Oct 03, 2010
Proposition 21 — ✔ YES
As said in the comment below me, this prop would encourage people to visit all of the wonderful state parks California has to offer. Also, it would move the $130 million the state currently spends on state parks into the general fund for the state. In the fiscal mess that we're in, every little bit helps. 12:05AM Oct 02, 2010
Proposition 22 — ✔ YES
Yes on prop 22 would ensure that the taxes we pay at the gas pump would go purely towards transportation needs, not to unrelated areas as they do now. Also, prop 22 would ensure the support of our deeply-needed programs such as 9-1-1, police, fire, and senior services. Prop 22 will not raise taxes, it will just prevent State raids of local funds. 11:14PM Oct 03, 2010
Proposition 23 — ✘ NO
Proposition 23 is—simply put—deceiving. The proposition states that the companies dispelling greenhouse gases into the atmosphere will not have to report the amount of gas they are responsible for until the unemployment rate lowers to at least 5.5 percent for at least a year. In the past thirty years, the unemployment rate in California has rarely gone below this 5.5% level, and when it does it doesn’t stay there for long. With the unemployment history in mind, it would be an indefinite amount of time before companies would be responsible for reporting the damaging greenhouse gases they are responsible for. Proposition wouldn’t be a suspension like the wording implies; it would be a repeal of existing laws that require companies to take account for their role in global warming. 5:17AM Sep 30, 2010
Proposition 24 — ✔ YES
Why would we allow tax breaks to large corporations in a time where our education system faces $17 billion in funding cuts and thousands of educators face termination. Prop 24 would benefit 2% of the wealthiest cooperations of this state. It is time that everyone-- especially the most well-off corporations-- pay their share in this mess that we're in. 11:38PM Oct 03, 2010
Proposition 25 — ✔ YES
More than anything, I like this proposition because it encourages legislators in California to be prompt when devising and passing a budjet. If this proposition is enacted, it would force California legislators to permanently forfeit any reimbursement for salary and expenses for every day until the day the legislature passes a budget bill. This could spare the state about $50,000 each day that the budjet is late. How's that for an incentive for lazy legislators? 11:31PM Oct 01, 2010
Proposition 26 — ✘ NO
Passing this proposition would only make it harder to impose pollution fees on companies ruining our environment and harming our health by legislation getting caught in an even more complicated process. 8:16AM Oct 03, 2010
Proposition 27 — ✘ NO
The parties in favor of prop 27 make an argument that this is about money; that leaving the duty of redistricting to a commission would be too costly. To make such an argument is absurd. It would be in the best interest of California to take away the power of redistricting from the politicians of this state and give it to a much more balanced commission. Prop 11 took the power of politicians to insure their own reelection and political gains by allowing them to have a direct influence on redistricting, and it should be kept that way. Accountability of our politicians-- above all other reasons-- is why this proposition should be shot down. 9:33PM Oct 03, 2010
Governor — ✔ EDMUND BROWN
Jerry (Edmund) Brown is the better choice for Governor in this race. Like his democratic counterpart running for Lieutenant Governor, Jerry is strong believer in creating clean-energy jobs in California in order to pull the state out of its fiscal crisis and into the future of alternate energy. He has a history of looking out for the well-being of all Californians by some of the toughest environment-protecting laws in the nation. Jerry Brown is also someone that California needs to pull California out of one of the worst economic times it has ever seen. As someone who has vetoed a pay raise for himself, he can be a governor to be counted on for promoting careful spending in these tough times. He has promoted several tax cuts and looked at as fairly conservative fiscally. Jerry Brown is exactly what California needs to recover from their teetering economy. 5:11AM Sep 30, 2010
Lieutenant Governor — ✔ GAVIN NEWSOM
Gavin Newsom is a strong candidate for lieutenant governor. He has a vision for where California is headed, and has a plan to create jobs along the way. His vision for creating new jobs is in the inevitable rise of the clean energy industry. He hopes to create a state that is the path-builder for the rest of the world in clean energy. Also, Gavin Newsom is committed to repairing the broken educational system of California. He sees the $800 million budget cut to the UC and CSU schools as counterproductive because it discourages the future of California’s economy—the students—from seeking a higher education. His track record as mayor of San Francisco proves his devotion to education; such as his decision to release $24.5 million from the city’s rainy day fund to prevent the layoff of 405 public school teachers. For these reasons and many more, Gavin Newsom is exactly who California needs in this time of disparity. 5:42AM Sep 30, 2010
United States House — ✔ NANCY PELOSI
As Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi has continually fought for the interests of the people. Most recently, she has fought for the Small Business Jobs Act that was signed into law on September 27th. This Act included $12 billion in tax cuts to small businesses. She also played a major role in passing the comprehensive health care reform. Nancy Pelosi has proved to play a key role in the progress of this nation, and she must retain this seat. 4:01AM Oct 04, 2010
United States Senate — ✔ BARBARA BOXER
Barbra Boxer has been committed to ending the war in Iraq since it started in 2002. While she supports or troops through supporting legislation for better funding, she definitely has been working diligently to get our troops home safely. Additionally, Boxer supports increasing the number of clean energy jobs as California moves into the future. She has supported several tax cuts for the middle class and supports government assistance in paying back student loans for students who enter certain service-based careers. 11:53PM Oct 01, 2010
State Assembly — ✔ FIONA MA
State Assembly — ✔ MICHAEL ESSWEIN
Michael Esswein is a strong advocate for not increasing the cost of education. He realizes the importance of investing in California's future by investing in the education of our youth. The return of education to California's economy is vast, and he sees investment in education as just that-- and investment in our economy. He also realizes the importance of the water crisis in the San Joaquin Valley and supports professional studies for options of water storage there. 12:08AM Oct 04, 2010
State Assembly — ✔ TOM AMMIANO
Tom Ammiano is a strong advocate to better the school of our community. He sponsored and helped pass a "Great Schools" charter amendment that added $300 million to public schools in San Francisco. Also, he has fought to drastically increase wages of low-paid workers in the city. He has also sought to fight against the gangs that plague our community by endorsing reach-out programs to at-risk youth. 4:01AM Oct 04, 2010
State Senate — ✔ LARRY JOHNSON
Larry Johnson is prepared to fight republicans who are out to overturn health care reform. He has long been a supporter of putting the needs of those seeking health insurance above the profits of large insurance companies. Additionally, he suggests a stricter oversight of interests rates of residents of California as to keep billions of dollars circulating within California. He is also a strong advocate for keeping religion out of government-- he realizes the danger in mixing the two as did our forefathers. 12:01AM Oct 04, 2010
State Senate — ✔ LELAND YEE
Attorney General — ✔ KAMALA HARRIS
Kamala Harris has always fought for civil rights issues such as marriage equality. She was quoted at a NO on Prop 8 rally as saying "it really has to be said-- we are all the same." She strongly believes that every American citizen should have the equal right to choose who they marry. She has expressed a vow to do everything in her power to help the push to repeal prop 8 if elected attorney general. 8:34AM Oct 03, 2010
Controller — ✔ JOHN CHIANG
As Controller, John Chiang has found more than $2 billion in government waste-- a figure far higher than any other previous Controller. Among these findings, he stopped the state from paying $11 million a year to dead employees. He is also a leader in pension reform and has successfully backed legislation that required all state pension programs to adopt disclosure policies. Chiang is committed to keeping a tight oversight on California's funds. 11:22PM Oct 03, 2010
Insurance Commissioner — ✔ DAVE JONES
Jones will fight to make sure insurers do not take advantage of California consumers. He is a strong advocate for disallowing health insurance companies to discriminate based on existing conditions. His history provides precedent that he is willing to reach across the aisle in order to do what is in the best interest of Californians and reach progressive change. He was named the most effective legislator by Capitol Weekly, and he will continue to work hard for voters needs as Insurance Commissioner. 10:14PM Oct 03, 2010
Secretary Of State — ✔ DEBRA BOWEN
Debra Bowen is a strong proponent of increasing voter turnout and education. She has streamlined the process for registering to vote which increased voter turnout to a record-breaking 79% in California for the 2008 election. Additionally, Bowen has been committed to election integrity since she took her seat in 2007. She has ordered new investigations of California's voting system and several flaws have since been discovered and she has sought to fix these problems. She is a strong fighter for the voters of California, and she must retain this position. 9:52PM Oct 03, 2010
Superintendent Of Public Instruction — ✔ LARRY ACEVES
Larry Aceves understands the importance of focusing less on paperwork and more on the actual learning of California's students. The state of California has forced mandate after mandate on teachers and superintendents taking their attention away from the students and more towards unneeded paperwork. It's time to direct focus back on the students, and Aceves understands this. He also recognizes the need to adequately fund the education system that has lacked enough funding to make in progressive for decades. 11:51PM Oct 03, 2010
Treasurer — ✔ BILL LOCKYER

Over the past three years as Treasurer, he has sold $68.2 billion of bonds to finance infrastructure projects to create thousands of jobs throughout California.
